I think this is my husband’s favorite. When I first heard the song after many years, I didn’t realize I'd heard it before until the chorus, when I couldn’t stop singing. Just ignore the verses. 3:04

A summery key change for a December day!

Making Time

I didn't think it was a true key change but I played along on guitar.  It gets funky before the change and I was confused but at 1:51 it officially plays the same chord progression a whole step higher than the first verse.
This groovy example of all that is rock and roll moves from D to E at 1:51.

I love Wilson Pickett.  I never heard this song until I was cruising through the town of Trentonia with the Sirius blasting and boom there it was.  What a sweet jam, loving the bari sax.
Key change at 2:30. Long live Lieutenant Dan.

Under The Sea

Nobody can rock an Octopus' Garden like Ringo and the Beatles...except maybe Sebastian from the Little Mermaid.  Dig the classic Disney key change at 2:52.  One of my all time favorite songs to jam out to.

Monday, November 10, 2014

Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car

This one is epic...he takes a whole 3 measures to slowly modulate. 3:45. I dare you not to listen to it multiple times.

Nadie Nos Va A Poder Parar

A tender indie pop gem of many key changed verses.

I'm So Excited

Daisy and I were taking a drive in our little car (Dumbo) when I'm So Excited by the Pointer Sisters came on the radio.

"This is one of my old standards from my DJ'ing days", I said.

"Some key change", said Daisy, at around 2:30 on the track.  She's starting to get the hang of this.

It really is an epic key change.  Hard to believe it escaped our attention/memory for so long!

Whole step up.

Happy Birthday Sweet 16

In the tradition of writing love songs for 16 year old girls, Neil Sedaka gives us a birthday surprise key change.
Also this song is pretty much a rip off of Take Good Care of My Baby.

Song starts in A. Each set of lyrics moves up half a key, so by the end of the song, you're in D.

Sweet Inspiration

This one has an amazing key change at around the 2:30 mark - stunning in the bridge yet quite subtle in the final rendering of the chorus.

The Jamestown Ferry

Not sure if I love or hate this song. Either way, it's super stuck in my head.
Half step key change half way in.

(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me

In this wonderful 1960s video, Sandy goes for a clothes change as well as a key change at c1:30 as she bridges to the new key.

Note from the editor:
Be sure to check out this amazing rendition as well!

She'd Rather Be With Me

In my journey through songs I might want to play on my baritone uke, I came across this classic/old favourite of mine - She'd Rather Be With Me by the Turtles.  A lovely little key change through the bridge to the final verse and chorus.

Quicksand is the second song on this blog from Honkey Dory with a key change. Dark lyrics about the occult Golden Dawn and it's most famous members.

Side note, it's too bad Changes doesn't have a key change :-/

Dark End Of The Street

I just heard this song about forbidden love for the first time on Friday.
The half step key change "when the daylight hours roll around" is one of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard.

I never realized this song was called Denise despite every verse starts with "Denise, Denise".
Half step key change by Randy and the Rainbows and Blondie.

Cupid I've Loved You For a Long Time

Cupid I've Loved You a Long Time is such a funny disco medley. This key change comes when The Spinners reprise the first song into a key change.
Also special note, this rendition has got to be the reason why Rod Stewart coved it as well.

I'd Like To Walk Around In Your Mind

The key change in Vashti Bunyan's "I'd Like To Walk Around In Your Mind" is one of the loveliest things ever.

Summertime Blues

This is one in a string of key changes I remembered because I was playing them on my guitar and I changed key without thinking about it.  One of my all-time favorite albums/bands/songs/covers/live jams: The Who - Summertime Blues.  What a full frontal assault of big cockery by Pete, Keith, John, and Rodgie.  If you turn up the volume loud enough, it'll kick your teeth in.
Key change at 2:24

Monday, June 9, 2014

Half step keychange at 1:35 in this 2 minute 1960's Swedish jam.

What is it about the 1950s and nonsense words and key changes?

Where The Boys Are

Connie Francis' most famous song from the 1960 film, ''Where The Boys Are''  penned by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield.
Half step key change hits just when this tune puts you to sleep.

Invisible Touch

I guess if Genesis was going to break away from their prog rock roots a song full of corny key changes would help.

Monday, May 5, 2014

Blame It On The Rain

I shouldn’t admit this, but “Blame It on the Rain” “by” Milli Vanilli totally has a key change.
-DJ Starr

Can't Fight The Moonlight

Songs you hear when hanging out with Megan.

Silence is Golden

An amazing song written by Bob Gaudio of the 4 Seasons, it was originally released as the B-side to Ragdoll. British band The Tremeloes, had a number hit with it in 1967 and also recorded a version in Italian which is awesome.
Half step at the end.

I usually try to avoid posting Jazz tunes but this is one of my all time favorite songs and Louie's band knocks this shit out of the park.

Nothing Gonna Change My Love For You

I wrote a parody of this song back in the early 1990s, replacing each line or phrase in the verses with a well-known line from a love song, making my version "The Ultimate Love Song".  The choruses went "Nothing's gonna change the way I sound..." etc. It was a hit at the Edinburgh fringe for many years.  The couplet running up to the key change went "This style's the one for me, the only thing I change is key".

It should have popped into my head sooner.
-Ian Harris

Venus in Bluejeans

This song represents everything that is corny about the 60s.
Including the most over exaggerated key change ever.

Heathcliff Theme Song

Although no one likes this cartoon, there is a key change it. I wish the Garfield them had one instead.

If I Could Build My Whole World Around You

The Prince of Soul and one of Philly's greatest all time talents rock out this classic Motown hit with a key change at 1:22. Tammi Terrell dated David Ruffin, Sam Cooke, and James Brown but never Marvin Gaye.  She died of a brain tumor in 1970 at the age of 24.

Turn The Beat Around

...With a rat-tat-tat-tat on the half step key change.

We Can't Stop

In the spirit of Puddles the Clown's rendition of Royals, this Miley Cyrus cover has a key change at 3:13.
Also, the background singers are the shit.
